Hair Loss Treatment

Hair loss can be a cause of anxiety in men and women but women rarely go bald.Hair disorders should be treated as early as possible. If treated early you can save yourself from baldness.You are at your friends house,enjoying some old photographs ,feeling nostalgic and suddenly you realize that you have developed thinning of hair, especially males. The thinning is gradual and the patient comes for treatment when he has lost most of his hair. If you have a heredity of baldness you should start treatment as soon as possible. Just applying different types of oils will not help. The market is flooded with different types of hair oils, hair packs, saloon and beauty parlor treatments. But hair loss has to be treated with internal medications and not just external applications.

  8. Androgenic Alopecia is seen in both males and females. It is a genetic condition. In males it is known as male pattern baldness and in females it is known as female pattern baldness. In male pattern baldness men start losing hair in young age. Some of them may start losing hair in their teenage years. In male pattern baldness there is receding hair line and the person may start losing hair from the crown and frontal area of scalp. Female pattern baldness usually seen in women after menopause.  There is thinning of hair as the hair follicle shrinks. Hair breaks easily. Women lose hair from all over the scalp, more hair loss is seen at the crown and where they part their hair.


Causes of male pattern baldness

  1. Heredity: Many patients have a family history of baldness.
  2. Hair follicles sensitive to DHT (di hydrotestesterone hormone) begin to miniaturize causing thinning of  hair


Causes of female pattern baldness

Genetics   Genetics is one of the cause for female pattern baldness.

Women in their menopausal age may experience hair loss . Hormonal imbalance is one of the cause of hair loss. Other causes of hair loss in women include tumors of pituitary gland.

Certain medications may also cause hair loss

  1. Alopecia Areata:  In patients suffering from alopecia areata, hair loss is seen in patches.It is an autoimmune disorder. The immune system attacks the hair follicles causing hair loss.
  2. Trichotillomania: The patient pulls his own hair due to some psychological disorder
  3. Involutional alopecia: There is thinning of hair as people age. This is called involutional alopecia
  4. Tellogen effluvium: It occurs when large number of hair enter into resting phase due to mental shock. It is diffuse type of hair loss
  5. Scarring alopecia: It results in permanent hair loss. It occurs due to diseases such as psoriasis, lichen planus and other inflammatory disease conditions
  6. Traction Alopecia: It occurs when women style their hair in tight pony tails causing pull in hair.


Causes of hair loss

  1. Genetic
  2. Hormonal imbalance
  3. Mental Stress
  4. Hair loss may occur when there is ,blood loss due to accident, major surgery or if the patient suffers from burns.
  5. Autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis may cause hair loss. Diseases such as lupus, lichen planus, fungal infection may cause hair loss
  6. Hair loss may also occur after child birth and during menopause in females
  7. Medical conditions like diabetes, hypothyroid and anemia can cause hair loss
  8. Parlor treatments like perming, using rollers, dyeing of hair ,using different chemicals on hair may cause hair loss
  9. Treatment

Minoxidil external application is given to treat hair loss. Hair transplant is done for patients who are bald. Follucular unit transplantation is done where a strip of skin  from back of scalp where there is abundant hair is taken, follicles are removed from that part of strip and re inserted in bald part of the scalp
